Village Hall Renovation Update – September 2012

The summer has seen continued progress in the refurbishment of the Village Hall. It’s a slow process, and we have to confess has been frustrating at times, but with perseverance the end result will have been well worth waiting for.

We started with a grant from WREN for £45,800, and with help from our builders, BW Property Services, and careful management from our Village Hall Team, we’ve so far managed to stretch the pennies to allow for a staggering £75,000 of work … and we continue to obtain and pursue further grant monies to improve the facilities even more.

The roof has been fully replaced and all the external brickwork has been made good where necessary and re-pointed. You may have also noticed a ring of gravel around the perimeter of the hall to help alleviate any rising damp issues.

Replacement double glazed windows have been installed, and a significant change has been the inclusion of two French windows and a ‘proper’ Fire Door to the west side of the hall. The overall effect has been to provide much more light, and good access to the outside.

We have lost the unsightly boarded-up windows at the back of the hall, and it is now watertight and structurally sound again after many years of neglect and lack of funding.

The external walls, which we had continual problems with due to falling (from the unseated roof tiles) and rising damp already seems to be drying out well so hopefully we have now resolved all the damp issues for the foreseeable future.

Internally, we have lowered the roof in the main hall area to reduce heat loss through the high pitch and uninsulated rafters, and added plenty of insulation, over and above the recommended limits.

A full rewire has now been completed up to current regulations, with much better lighting. We now have a completely (and much needed) rejuvenated heating system with the addition of a new boiler, pipework, and controller. We have already seen an improvement to the energy efficiency, and with fuel prices continually on the rise this means less money spent heating the place and more on the facilities.

A number of regular users and groups have already commented positively on the ‘new bright look’ and the fact that the hall is warmer.

The main hall and porch has been entirely skimmed , and is in the process of being redecorated.

The next steps are to complete the refurbishment of the Gents and Ladies toilets, and a make-over for the servery. A new cooler has been purchased and has already proved its worth by delivering cold beers for hot residents at some recent functions.

We have recently secured a second grant from “Awards for All” for £8,919, and have two more grants awaiting responses to help with redecoration. As well as this we have also been given generous donations from local business and residents of the village totalling £1,000 towards the refurbishment plans; North Notts. Lions (£500), Notts. County Council (£400), and private donation of £100. A big thank you to all for your continued support.

BUT … we’re not stopping there … future plans are already being worked through with regards to Phase 2 and 3 of the refurbishment programme for the external works – a new entrance and car park, and also an extension to the side of the Village Hall which would provide additional space for kitchen and toilet areas, thus freeing up space inside the current building

We must extend our continued and grateful thanks to all our User Groups and regular users for putting up with, and working around, the renovation work, and continuing despite the dust, mess and inconvenience caused. Hopefully this will reduce soon!

We now have an additional regular group – Fitness For All, which seems to be very popular – come and join in on a Monday night.

In terms of events; regular Coffee Mornings are still a big attraction and provide an opportunity to get to know what’s happening in the village. These are well publicised on the Village Hall and Sutton Village websites … and of course in the Sutton Spotlight.

We have not had much opportunity with respect to organising many fund raising events due to the refurbishments, but we have a Christmas Market planned for the 8th December, so do come along and pick up some bargain gifts.

The Village Hall Committee remain resolute in their campaign to improve the Village Hall facilities, and we hope that the coming year will see even more changes and improved facilities.

Committee members have also planted four apple trees in memory of June Barlow, one of our long-standing Committee members who died last year These were purchased with a grant obtained from the Nottinghamshire Community Foundation Bramley Fund.

So, as we move forward, what do we need from you? As users of the Village Hall and residents of the village, we really do need you to support our endeavours by:

Supporting and attending the events and groups that we, or others, put on

Lending your help and support to the Committee, either by becoming a Committee member, trustee, or even offering help at events.

And if you’re good at something in particular and would like to help, but don’t really want to attend meetings, please let us know. You may find that you could run a small group, or just meet up with like-minded people. Failing that, just give us (and your village) a helping hand; there’s always stuff to do, and we’re always short of volunteers to do it.

Support our resolution to turn the Village Hall into a thriving community facility that we are all proud of, and in particular stamp out senseless vandalism, and crime. We’ve suffered our fair share of this. We know this isn’t easy, but you are they eyes and ears of the village, and the Village Hall is your hall; be proud of it and make a difference.

Visit the Village Hall website and tell us what you think. We have many people looking at our site from far and wide and compliment us on our Hall site and facilities.

Finally thanks, as always, to our solid volunteers, the current Village Hall Committee members who donate a few hours each month to making this a facility we’re all proud of.
